Dr. M. L. Garza Gonzalez Charter School is ahead of the Covid 19 Virus with their students already starting their home school experience on Friday March 20, 2020. Parents were stopping by the school to pick up the instructional material and to meet with classroom teachers. Juan Salazar, first grade teacher, said that parents were very reassured to get to speak directly with classroom teachers and know the teachers would be available throughout the entire school facility closure. Mrs. Bernal said" Parents are appreciative with the manner and way the school and teachers have really stepped up. I myself have been impressed by the level of commitment of the teachers and staff." Parents have already sent the teachers pictures of their children working on their school homework.
Mrs. Dee Dee Bernal, Superintendent called a meeting Monday with the Administration and Lead Teachers to develop a plan for continued instruction for the foreseeable future. "What is most important is that we continue to serve our students in a manner that is safe and effective," according to Mrs. Bernal.
During the meetings, the administration and staff developed an instructional program that would take the students from March 23 until the end of the school year. Deciding that a hybrid of hard copies and online delivery would best serve the students, the lead teachers outlined a strategy to get the students to the end of the year.
On Tuesday the teachers came in and planned 10 weeks of instruction both with hardcopies and online learning. A book bag with all the students reading material and workbooks was set up for each student. Written instruction and a schedule of assignments were given to the students and parents. Each student is getting an I-Pad with a variety of instructional material. Mr. Salazar, first grade teacher explained that his grades I-Pads had: Education Galaxy, Adaptive Minds, Class Dojo, Khan Academy, Google Classroom, Khan Kids App. Upper grades are using Edmodo in addition.
The teachers are calling or communicating with every child every school day. Mr. Salazar sends a video to all students and parents with a daily message using Class Dojo. He also uses his phone to talk with students and will be setting up Stream Classes through Google Classroom. Mr. Salazar wants his students to stay in contact with him and to continue their progress. During his interview, he received calls and texts from parents regarding the instruction.
The Librarian set up a reading center, where parents could take home additional reading material home located in front of the school. The lunchroom staff will be preparing breakfast and lunch for student drive-through pickup commencing on Tuesday March 24 from 11:00 till we are out of food. The program provides meals to children under 18, at this point the children are required to be in the car for the food program.
